El Jardin

La Casa del Viento is the main house of the property (where I live). It has a fantastic view from the kitchen window over the village and mountain, this is where I am happy to be working away on breakfast, lunch and evening meals for any of those who choose to take advantage of being cooked for (saving the stress and time of shopping and cooking, oh and clearing up afterwards!). Meals are served in the winter months in front of my big open fire together with family, friends and the dogs usually taking pride of place on the rug by the fire.

On the warmer nights and of course all the summer months eating out is a must on one of the patios or terraces. Views to die for from ‘La Vista’ where on a clear day you can even see the mountains on the far coast of Morocco or around the pool under a gazebo hanging with grape vines. At the pool area there is a bar and barbeque area and plenty of space with tables, chairs and sun beds.

There are pretty flower gardens, paths, nooks and cranny’s around the casitas for you to sit or wander. If you go down the track onto the rugged terraces below the houses you will find my vegetable garden and every variety of fruit and nut trees but my main crop is ‘the olive’. The olives are harvested during the winter months so I always have my own black olives to be samples and plenty of oil to see me through the year. I use as much home grown produce as possible every day and am continually bottling and preserving. I also like to shop locally for fresh local produce, meat, fruit and vegetables in particular.

During the winter months I have a regular ‘Sunday Lunch’ (choice of roast meats, roast potatoes, lots of veggies, all the sauces etc and choices of desserts) for clients and local residents. It is particularly popular with the English from the village, but the Spanish are also intrigued with our Sunday ritual. The only difference is that we can more often than not still eat outside, taking in the views and a bit of sun.

During the summer months, when the evenings are long and warm, or even hot! I have regular evening stints, paella nights, barbeques, a tapas evening etc, these are usually organized on request.

Other events have been held here on request, for example weddings and birthday parties. I have also had requests to do some cookery classes – I’m certainly willing to do this although not trained to and only consider myself a ‘family cook’.

Of course I can’t manage all by myself so as ‘helpers’ I take on volunteers from 3 different organizations ‘The wwoofers’ (willing workers on organic farms) ‘HelpX’ (help in exchange for board and lodgings) and ‘Workaway’. These can be helpers from anywhere in the world, any age, for any length of time, a week to a year. It is so interesting to meet and enjoy the company of these people and is a great exchange.

I love it here so I just have to share it with YOU!
